Glass Straws

Written by Sheila Emery Murphy on .

I’ve been thinking about straws. Yep, that’s right straws. Why? Because typically if you drink through a straw, you will drink more. So, I often put a straw in my water so more healthy hydration goes down the hatch.

I try to be environmentally friendly, but this little disposabe plastic item escaped my attention for quite some time. Then I learned some compelling facts. According to the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC), “Today we produce far more plastic waste than can be recovered or recycled.”  And per the Be Straw Free Campaign, “each day we use 500,000,000 disposal straws” – that is a lot of plastic!  Not to mention that plastic straws are made of polypropylene, a petroleum bi-product.

I am a firm believer that small changes add up to a big difference long-term. So, I decided to make a small change. I switched to reusable glass straws. Not only are these Dharma Glass Straws beautiful, reusable and environmentally-friendly, they are backed by a lifetime guarantee. However, although they offer this guarantee, they are NOT claiming that they are unbreakable. (Any more than your pyrex coffee pot or pie plate would be.)

Another good way to make a simple small change is to commit to ask for your drinks "strawless" when eating out or on the go.  To learn more about the “Be Straw Free Campaign” click here. A small change, like skipping or upgrading your straw can have a real environmental impact – each of us can make a difference.
